CRAGSIDE HOUSE & GARDENS

Often considered to be Britain’s first smart home, Cragside is powered by hydraulics and hydro-electricity, and filled with gadgets from the Victorian age, which were designed for efficient modern living. And it’s not just the house that draws visitors. 

The many different gardens are a delight to explore, and Cragside also has a labyrinth.

Standing on a windswept and rocky headland, overlooking the village, imposing Bamburgh Castle boasts an incredible treasure trove of history, that spans over 3,000 years, with each stone telling a story; from those of the kings, queens and Vikings who once roamed the hallways, to fabled dragons and ghosts.

The town of Ashington was once the largest pit village in the world and the Woodhorn Museum, a former 19th century coal mine, is a centre for art and local historic relics.

Occupying 350 acres of countryside, this living working museum offers a fascinating insight into different time periods in the northeast, as costumed staff deliver fascinating stories of everyday life from the 1820s through to the 1950s. 

Enjoy freshly made bread straight from the Edwardian bakery, take a tram ride, visit the pit ponies, and see how life was during the Second World War.
HADRIAN’S WALL
HADRIAN’S WALL

Built under the rule of the Roman Empire and stretching from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend on the River Tyne, this famed heritage site covers a staggering 73 miles going from coast to coast, and includes forts, milecastles and turrets.

Here you will see rare Roman artieacts and be afforded spectacular views of the rugged Northumbrian landscape.

This ‘must see’ spectacular open-air live show has been a huge success ever since it launched in 2016. 

Taking place every summer in County Durham, it covers two thousand years of history, myth, and legend, taking you through the ages and bringing to life the wars, rebellions and reigns of Britain’s best loved and most vilified rulers, from the Vikings to the Tudors.

Enjoying a quayside position on the River Tyne, the vibrant city of Newcastle, with its Georgian architecture, offers visitors a warm Geordie welcome, and a diverse array of cultural attractions, including the famous Tyne Bridge, the Discovery Museum, St James Park, and Newcastle Castle, from which the city takes its name.

Known for its medieval religious heritage and also its 16th century castle, which sits perched on a rocky plateau, Lindisfarne, more commonly referred to as Holy Island, has been attracting visitors for years. It remains a place of pilgrimage, but is also home to a wealth of wildlife, that live in the saltmarshes and dunes.

Set in a coastline of rocky shores, sand dunes, and windswept beaches, Bamburgh today is a quiet, but pretty little village, though that wasn’t always the case, as it was once the bustling hub of royal Northumbria. 

Dominated by its castle, it still has much to offer visitors, including the RNLI Grace Darling Museum and a picture postcard high street with its cafes and restaurants.

Brimming with charm and a rich history, this pretty market town, with its beautiful floral gardens and bandstand, was named the happiest place to live in 2019 and 2021, and has much to offer visitors. Stunning Hexham Abbey is famed for being one of the first seats of English Christianity, and is well worth a visit, and the town hosts a weekly shambles market, as well as an annual book festival.
DURHAM

Lying on a dramatic peninsula in the northeast of England, majestic Durham is a treasure trove of historic castles, industrial heritage museums and breathtaking scenery. 

The city skyline is dominated by Durham Cathedral, one of the most recognisable buildings in the UK, as well as Durham Castle; now part of Durham University.

ALNWICK
ALNWICK

This busy market town is steeped in history and is most famous for its fairytale castle. 

Often referred to as the ‘Windsor of the North’, it was built following the Norman Conquest and is owned by the 12th Duke of Northumberland, and it has featured in a number of screen adaptations from Harry Potter and Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves, to Downton Abbey.
