Things to do in Torquay

Princess Gardens - Torquay

Built in the 1890s, the Princess Gardens are named for Princess Louise, Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, who planted the first stone for the gardens in 1894.

The gardens are an expansive Victorian seaside garden with stunning views of the harbour and ocean.

The owner of the Torbay Hotel gave the exquisite fountain, which is surrounded by well-kept gardens and has an antique gold and silver colour scheme.

Torre Abbey Sands

Torre Abbey Sands is a beautiful beach with lots of seating areas during low tide and a gentle drop off into the water, making swimming and paddling safe.

You can take in the lovely views of Torbay by strolling the entire length of the promenade from Torquay's harbour to Torre Abbey Sands.

Torquay Harbour

Torquay Harbour, one of the most recognisable and lively harbours in the English Riviera, is a bustling area with so many gorgeous boats you could swear you're in the French Riviera!

There are plenty of spots for a Devon Cream Tea and a cuppa as well as seating dotted around where you can relax and watch the world go by or the fishing boats come in.

Thatcher Point - Torquay
Thatcher Point is a fantastic green space with a breathtaking view of Thatcher Rock and out to sea.

People come to Thatcher Point to enjoy the sea views and to see the Rock itself, or to simply walk along the nearby South West Coast Path.

The site also has a variety of flora and birdlife.

Newton Abbot
Located in South Devon, Newton Abbot is a charming market town with both an indoor and outdoor market, making it an ideal destination for dining and shopping.

It is renowned for horse racing as well, with a magnificent racetrack in the town centre.
Dartmoor National Park
Devon County is home to the substantial moorland known as Dartmoor National Park.

Encompassed of forests, rivers, wetlands, and granite tors formed approximately 280 million years ago, Dartmoor National Park is home to the iconic Dartmoor ponies that roam its rugged terrain.

Paths meander through valleys dotted with Neolithic tombs, abandoned medieval farmhouses, and stone circles from the Bronze Age. Numerous villages dot the landscape, one of which is Princetown, the location of Dartmoor Prison during the Napoleonic Wars
Babbacombe Model Village
One of Torquay's top attractions is the miniature village and railway, Babbacombe Model Village, which opened in 1963.

The model village takes you on a nostalgic journey through the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and current times by showcasing British life and culture over the last fifty years.
House of Marbles
Quality vintage and traditional toys and games are produced by the House of Marbles, which is based on a historic pottery-making site.

The amazing collection of custom built marble runs, fairground mirrors, penny press, and an enormous floating marble will keep you occupied for hours.

Professional glassblowers are available for viewing at Teign Valley Glass. Along with visiting the listed kilns, you can stroll along the historic trail that features museums featuring glass, games, marbles, and Bovey Pottery.
Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves
Kents Cavern is notable for its archaeological and geological features, with a well-lit atmospheric cave system that allows you can see the amazing rock formations.

As you are guided around you learn interesting facts and stories, about how the caves were once home to Britain's earliest humans and Ice Age beasts that really bring the caves to life.
Buckfast Abbey
At just over a century old, Buckfast Abbey is a modern abbey by all measures.

Over the course of thirty years, beginning in 1906, Benedictine Monks meticulously rebuilt the Abbey by hand.

The architecture of the nearby churches features classic stained glass windows with multiple narratives, as well as stonework. Inside and out, Buckfast Abbey is stunning.

The well-kept gardens are enjoyable to stroll through. After visiting, why not buy some of the renowned tonic wine from the gift shop?
