Folkestone Things to Do

Folkestone Old Town
Discover the charming, eccentric stores, galleries, cafes, and restaurants lining the winding, hilly, tiny cobblestone streets of the ancient high street, all encircled by stunning architecture spanning centuries
Folkestone Harbour Arm
A beautiful strolling area with breathtaking views, the Folkestone Harbour Arm offers plenty of places to eat or have a picnic, as well as a terrific seaside vibe. At low tide, keep an eye out for the Gormley monument beneath the harbour.
Folkestone Sands
This beach, also called Sunny Sands, is close to the harbour and the amenities, providing a sandy area with lots of covered spots. The sculpture known as the "Folkestone Mermaid" stands to one side, peering over the exposed dunes during low tide.
Memorial Arch
The Step Short Centenary Arch is a beautiful monument and appropriate remembrance of the hundreds of thousands of World War One "Tommy Atkins" who were drafted, or, in later years, recruited to fight in the trenches in Northern France and Belgium. It also provides a nice, well-maintained promenade with several levels along the waterfront.
Leas Promenade and Lift
In Folkestone, Kent, there was a funicular train known as the Folkestone Leas Lift, which is listed as Grade II. It transported passengers from the promenade to the waterfront. It was first put in place in 1885. By 2025, the Folkestone Leas Lift Company Charity hopes to have the lift restored and operational again.
Folkestone Museum
This museum, located in the centre of Folkestone, features collections from Master (art), Ancient periods, Frontline (war), Maritime (sea), Nature, and Fashion, taking you on a journey through the town's evolution from a coastal community to an elegant seaside resort.

Excursions from Folkestone

Deal
Surrounded by lively cafes and taverns, this little gem of a town has a picturesque seashore and sweeping pier.

It is not just a beach resort but is home to two significant castles: Deal Castle was one of Henry VIII's three fortifications he built along this coastal area.

There is an original pair of Wellington boots on display at Walmer Castle, which served as the Duke of Wellington's previous headquarters.
Rye
One of the best-preserved medieval towns in England is Rye. You will be mesmerised by a town where time stands still, with names like Wish Street, Watchbell Lane, and Mermaid Street.

The twisted half-timbered homes line a tangle of cobbled roads, resembling something from an old-time movie. A castle holds a unique smuggler's lamp and a mediaeval herb garden.

Head to the castle's towers for views of the town and the Rother Estuary. If that isn't enough, you may browse independent stores, historic inns, and seaside walks.
Whitsable
Situated in a sheltered area at the head of the Swale, Whitstable is a tranquil resort that provides delicious seafood and beautiful walks along the shore.

Whitstable is the jewel of the Kent coast, well-known for its internationally acclaimed oysters, vibrant harbour market, and booming art scene.
Canterbury
A UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in history, Canterbury is surrounded by a mediaeval city wall and is dominated by its magnificent cathedral. It also features charming parks, gardens, and historic buildings virtually wherever you look.
Hastings
Set amidst sea-facing hills and dominated by William the Conqueror's castle, Hastings is home to Victorian architecture, black-tarred fishing huts with a pebbled shoreline, and is most famous for being the setting of the hit television detective series Foyle's War.
Battle of Britain Memorial
Housed in a former armoury, the Kent Battle of Britain Museum includes an art gallery, the Luftwaffe Room, the RAF Room, and the Aircraft Armaments Room.

A short video featuring interviews with fighter pilots about their memories of the Battle of Britain and a very educational display detailing the events that transpired is the memorial's main attraction. Static displays of a Spitfire and a Hurricane are also present.

Perched atop the well-known white cliffs, this National Memorial to the Few enjoys a spectacular view of France across the Channel.
