Things to do in Bournemouth

Alum Chine Beach

Alum Bay, located just over a mile from the main Bournemouth beach, is a nice sandy beach with a gentle slope that allows access to the water.

During the peak season, lifeguards are on duty, and this relatively calmer beach has all the services and restaurants you need to spend the day relaxing here.

Bournemouth Pier

The main pier is a unique landmark of Bournemouth and well worth a visit. Walking down costs £1.50, but it's well worth it.

Bournemouth Pier offers a variety of activities (including conventional arcades), as well as numerous restaurants and bars.

There is even a zip wire! This is an authentic English seaside pier with wonderful views of the sea and Bournemouth.

Lower Gardens

Lower Gardens, located near Bournemouth's beach and city centre, are vibrant and well-kept gardens.

Stroll around the level walks and seek out the memorial stones, or simply relax by a stream that runs through the centre of the garden.

There are lots of green and shaded spaces and on some evenings live music is available in the park.

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum has an eclectic mix of paintings, collections, sculptures, and furniture.

The building itself is a beautifully preserved mansion with amazing sea views; don't forget to look up at the beautiful architecture as you walk around.

As you enter, you'll pass through attractive gardens that overlook the sea. There is also a nice tea room with scones, sandwiches, and cakes as a treat.

Places to visit near Bournemouth

New Forest

The New Forest National Park is a 'world capital' for biodiversity, with a wide range of unique plants and animals, including the famous wild horses and ponies that wander freely in peace.

It is a lovely forest with an excellent atmosphere, visit the lowland park, which has scenic views and spacious trails that beg to be explored as they wind through centuries-old woodlands.

Bolderwood is a protected forest and deer sanctuary that was previously used for hunting by the Norman rulers.

Beaulieu Palace House & Estate

Set in the idyllic New Forest setting, overlooking the picturesque Beaulieu River millpond, Beaulieu Palace House and Gardens are well worth a visit.

The house is well-maintained and in fantastic condition, its architectural heritage sets the magnificent gothic tone for a home brimming with character and filled with family treasures, portraits and memorabilia.

You'll find costumed staff explaining how it worked in the past and exhibits displaying items from previous generations, making each room come to life.

Swanage Railway

Take a nostalgic trip on the Swanage Railway steam/heritage railway to Corfe Castle or Swanage through beautiful countryside.

The stations on the routes are decorated in the 'golden age of steam' style, and the coaches have been magnificently restored. The staff are always friendly, enthusiastic, and informative.

Stopping off along the way will let you tour numerous museums at each station, as well as a shop in Swanage.

Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour is just a 20-minute drive from Bournemouth and is one of the world's largest natural harbours with boats docked on one side and pleasure cruisers on the other, going to several different locations.

Brownsea Island, the largest island in Poole Harbour, is only accessible by boat and is a popular summer tourist destination.

The island's environment is beautiful, from harsh rocky beaches to the dramatic Brownsea Castle, which Henry VIII erected to guard Poole Harbour.
