Places to visit on the Isle of Man

Douglas
Douglas

Nestled along the east coast of the Isle of Man, Douglas (Manx: Doolish) is the capital city of the island. Streets are dotted with 19th-century buildings and this waterfront town has plenty of independent boutiques and High Street shops.

At Douglas Bay you can see the Tower of Refuge on Mary's Isle, a stone-built castellated structure which originally housed a bell for summoning of help and offered shelter to shipwreck victims until help could arrive.

Within the town centre, you will find a range of museums including the Manx Museum and the Douglas Heritage Museum.
Port Erin
Port Erin

Situated in the southwest of the island, Port Erin is a marine conservation zone so there is no commercial fishing here.

Instead, Erin offers a perfect mix of pristine beaches, picturesque bays, a wonderful promenade and home to the 3ft narrow gauge Douglas - Port Erin Steam Railway.

Take the walk up to the Falcon’s Nest to admire the view of Port Erin’s horseshoe bay from a height, on a clear day you can even spot the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland on the horizon.

Then stroll along Raglan pier to visit the iconic green and white lighthouse at the end.
St John's
St John's

St John’s is a small village in the centre of the Isle of Man (Glenfaba). Home to Tynwald Hill, the location of the Manx National Day where all new laws are read out to the public.

It's also where the Manx Parliament still hold an open-air session each year.

There are places for lovely walks including the Tynwald National Park and Arboretum and Slieau Whalian Plantation.
Peel
Peel

A popular seaside destination, Peel (Celtic for “fort”) is filled with narrow streets filled with fishermen's cottages, with boats regularly leaving and entering the harbour.

Just past the beautiful Fenella Beach, you will find the scenic Peel Castle ruins and the Victorian pier leading to the iconic Peel Lighthouse.

There are a range of attractions to visit, including the House of Manannan which explores local Celtic, Viking & maritime heritage.
Ramsey
Ramsey

Ramsey is a coastal town in the north of the Isle of Man and the second largest town on the island.

When you arrive, you'll descend Mountain Road or Coast Road from Laxey where you cannot help but be impressed by the sweeping views as you arrive.

Here you will find a range of shopping streets, a working harbour, and a golden, sandy beach which slopes gently down to the sea and has views of Albert Tower.

By the coast, you will see the prominent yet derelict pier, called the Queen’s Pier. Ramsey is also home to The Manx Electric railway station, situated in the centre of the town, from here you can take the coastal ride as far as Laxey.
Castletown
Castletown

Castletown is a historic harbour town that was once the Isle of Man's capital and has roots back to 1090.

The town is filled with narrow streets and small fishing cottages with Castle Rushen at its centre, this castle was originally built in 1265 and has been used as a fortress, residence for Kings and even a prison!

Alongside Castle Rushen there are plenty of national heritage sites denoting the history of the town, including The Nautical Museum, The Old Grammar School (originally a church from 1200AD) and the Old House of Keys (which moved to Douglas in 1874).

Things to do on the Isle of Man

Isle of Man Steam Railway
Isle of Man Steam Railway

The heritage railways of the Isle of Man are unique and upkept from the Victorian era where carriages are beautifully upholstered and fitted out.

The Isle of Man Narrow Gauge Steam Railway runs its nostalgic return trip fifteen and a half miles from the Island's capital, Douglas to Port Erin via Castletown and Port St. Mary, steaming through beautiful countryside with glimpses of the sea.
Snaefell Mountain Railway
Snaefell Mountain Railway

The Snaefell Mountain Railway is an electric mountain railway which departs from the village of Laxey (home to the wheel) and travels up to the summit of Snaefell Mountain which is 621m
above sea level, you can enjoy commentary on the journey informing you of the history of the railway and its surrounding attractions.

At the top of the mountain on a good day, you can even see Wales, and find a cafe and beautiful panoramic views.
Manx Electric Railway
Manx Electric Railway

The Manx Electric Railway first opened in 1893 and is a unique survivor from the pioneering days of electric tramways.

The vintage line travels a 17 mile journey from the end of the promenade in Douglas, riding along the coast to Laxey where you can then catch the Snaefell Mountain Railway.

This heritage rail journey takes you back in time to the Victorian Era and the views of the idyllic countryside from the tram are spectacular.
Laxey Wheel
Laxey Wheel

The Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 as a revolutionary industrial architecture to pump water from the lead mines at Glen Mooar, part of the Great Laxey Mines.

It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Isle of Man.

The world famous wheel stands at over 72 feet, and you can watch turn before climbing the wheel itself for beautiful panoramic views of the valley.
