Things to do in the Lake District

Lake Windermere

With a length of 10.5 miles, or a little over 18 kilometres, Windermere, located in the Lake District, is the longest lake in England. Visit the well-known tourist destination Bowness-on-Windermere, which is known for its vibrant lakeside quays and charming lanes, before cruising Lake Windermere to see the surrounding landscape from a new perspective.

Keswick & Derwentwater

Keswick, a market town on the shores of Derwentwater, is situated by the banks of Thirlmere. It offers flat, easy-to-follow trails that wind through woodland or along the lakeshore. There are several fascinating historical places in Keswick to explore, including the Derwent Pencil Museum, the Bowder Stone, the Castlerigg Stone Circle, and the Honister Slate Mine

Grasmere

William Wordsworth, the poet, lived in the picturesque historic village of Grasmere, which he famously called "the most loveliest spot that man hath found." The village features both beautiful and historic architecture along the lake.

Hill Top - Beatrix Potter's House

Explore Beatrix Potter's world through the eyes of Peter Rabbit at National Trust Hill. Acquired in 1905 through the profits from Peter Rabbit, Beatrix drew inspiration for numerous of her "little books" from the area around Hill Top. Notable locations include the garden where Tom Kitten and his sisters played and the rhubarb patch where Jemima Puddle-Duck deposited her egg!

The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Take a heritage steam train ride back in time to savour the memories of a bygone period. Steam engines pull classic 1950s carriages through the Leven Valley's rural landscape, bringing passengers to Lakeside Station for a leisurely ride that allows them to connect with Windermere Lake Cruises.

Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway

From the old Roman Port of Ravenglass, the narrow-gauge railway in the Lake District, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway offers steam train rides amid seven miles of scenic tracks and breath-taking landscapes.

Wray Castle - National Trust

Explore this magnificent estate on Windermere Lake, which includes sweeping parkland, forest, and a shingle shoreline with spectacular views of the local fells and lake. The Victorian neo-Gothic construction, with its turrets and towers, is a great site for walking around, and you can even go down and along the lakeside.

Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby Lonsdale is surrounded by the National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District and is located in the scenic River Lune Valley. In addition to the well-known Devil's Bridge and Ruskin's View, which served as inspiration for painter Turner, this charming ancient market town is also home to a church from the twelfth century and a garden that has lasted the test of time.
