COACH HOLIDAYS TO KENT

A selection of escorted holidays and breaks to Kent

Nestled in the southeast corner of England, Kent is one of the country’s oldest counties, deriving its name from an ancient Celtic tribe, and it has more castles and historic houses than any other place in Britain, as well as a rich and fascinating history.

The county is also known for its green spaces; particularly its traditional orchards and hop gardens.

As one of the driest and sunniest parts of England, it offers the perfect climate for many different plants and flowers to thrive, which has quite rightly earned it the title of the Garden of England.

From Kent’s largest town, Maidstone, home to Leeds Castle, and the cathedral city of Canterbury, to coastal delights, such as popular Folkestone and lovely Dover, with its iconic castle overlooking the famous white cliffs, you will be spoilt for places to visit.

At Grand UK Holidays all our coach holidays to Kent include the services of our trusted and experienced Tour Managers. Even better, our coach holiday packages include admission fees, tickets, guided tours and complimentary passes, so no hidden extra charges.

Things to do in Kent

LEEDS CASTLE
LEEDS CASTLE

Situated across two islands in the middle of a magnificent lake, this Grade I castle is listed in the Domesday Book and over the years has been a Norman stronghold as well as a royal residence.

It is nicknamed the ‘castle of queens’, having been home to so many, but perhaps its most famous owner is Henry VIII, who transformed it into a lavish palace.

As well as gardens and a maze, there are many activities and things to explore.
LULLINGSTONE CASTLE & WORLD GARDEN
LULLINGSTONE CASTLE & WORLD GARDEN

Occupying 120 acres of the Kent countryside, this 15th-century castle is one of England’s oldest family estates, and lying within a red brick walled garden you will find the World Garden.

An amazing botanical delight that pays homage to the Edwardian and Victorian plant hunters, who travelled the world in search of rare blooms.
SISSINGHURST CASTLE GARDENS
SISSINGHURST CASTLE GARDENS

This National Trust property has a rich history, starting off life as a prison and then a poor house, before it was bought by the green-fingered author and poet, Vita Sackville-West, who transformed the Elizabethan mansion and grounds into one of the most spectacular gardens in the country.

The displays are divided into a series of rooms including the White Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Lime Walk.
CHARTWELL
CHARTWELL

Just a short drive from London and on the doorstep of some of Kent’s finest landscapes, you will find the country house that for over forty years was the home of Winston Churchill.

The inside of the grand households an awe of magic and will appeal to anyone with an interest in WWII, while the tranquil grounds are beautifully maintained and offer wonderful views.
PENSHURST PLACE
PENSHURST PLACE

This 14th century manor house set in the Weald of Kent countryside was once owned by Henry VIII and features one of the few remaining medieval Baron’s Court.

Is surrounded by eleven acres of walled Tudor gardens, filled with wooded trails, water features and an abundance of tulips, roses and other colourful borders.
HEVER CASTLE AND GARDENS
HEVER CASTLE AND GARDENS

From being the birthplace of Anne Boleyn to part of the annulment settlement for Anne of Cleves following her divorce from Henry VIII, this 13th century romantic castle has a fascinating history and stands proud in the Kent countryside.

Set on stunning grounds that include a formal Italian Garden and topiary, a water maze and a yew maze, it is definitely worth a visit.

Places to visit in Kent

DOVER
DOVER

Known as the ‘Gateway to England’ the coastal town of Dover is a major port for ferries travelling to Calais, but it is perhaps most famed for its striking white cliffs, which serve as Britain’s nearest point to Europe.

The harbour itself is a place full of maritime charm, while hidden inside the cliffs and accessed by secret wartime tunnels, you will find the Underground Hospital.
CANTERBURY
CANTERBURY

Step inside the medieval walls of Kent’s only city and you will find a treasure trove to explore.

Without doubt, the most famous landmark is the impressive Canterbury Cathedral, but St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church are also worth a visit.

The River Stour winds through the city and pretty Westgate Park attracts visitors all year round. Plus Canterbury is home to Bagpuss.
ROCHESTER
ROCHESTER

The town of Rochester falls under the district of Medway, along with neighbouring Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham and Strood, and it is home to some of the oldest buildings in England.

Rochester Castle is one of the tallest in the country, while its cathedral dates back to 604. The town is known for its charming and independent shops.
FOLKESTONE
FOLKESTONE

Lying in a valley on the edge of the North Downs, and straddled by two cliffs, the port town of Folkestone is also a popular seaside resort and has been attracting visitors since the Victorian era, in part thanks to its beautiful Sunny Sands Beach.

The town has seen a resurgence in recent years following the restoration of the Harbour Arm Promenade.
WHITSTABLE
WHITSTABLE

Lying on Kent’s north coast, this pretty seaside town has a rich maritime history and an artistic relaxed ambience with many independent craft shops and boutiques, and it offers miles of beautiful coastal walks in both directions, with stunning sunsets thanks to its position.

Whitstable has long been famed for its oysters, which have been harvested in the town since Roman times.
HERNE BAY
HERNE BAY

Steeped in Edwardian and Victorian heritage, this seaside resort with its pretty beach huts, offers a level promenade, central bandstand, and well-kept seafront gardens.

It has a beach that stretches for two miles and is home to the world’s first freestanding clock tower, as well as a pier that features traditional delights, such as a carousel, helter-skelter, and carnival stalls
ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS
ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS

The High Weald area of Kent is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Royal Tunbridge Wells lies at the very heart of this.

Just thirty minutes away from southeast London, this elegant area is known for its moated castles, grand manor houses and pretty gardens, as well as The Pantiles; a Georgian colonnaded walkway known for its independent shops.
RAMSGATE
RAMSGATE

Once one of the great seaside towns of the 19th century, Ramsgate offers a continental appeal, perhaps thanks to its yacht-filled marina.

Steeped in history, the town played an important role in both the Napoleonic Wars and the Dunkirk evacuation and has the merit of being the UK’s only Royal Harbour.

It is also home to the biggest network of wartime tunnels, which are definitely worth exploring.
MARGATE
MARGATE

Known as England’s first seaside resort and home to the oldest scenic wooden rollercoaster in England, Margate offers a sandy beach, a cinque port harbour, and a stone arm pier.

The Crab Museum, Margate Caves and the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery are all worth a visit, and the town’s coastal position means you can view the sun setting over the sea.
DEAL
DEAL

Nestled on the East Kent coast, at the point where the English Channel merges with the North Sea, this quirky town with its pebbly beach and pristine seafront, is regarded as one of the best places to live in Britain.

As well as boasting an excellent choice of independent shops, Deal is home to two castles, a weekly market, and fantastic Georgian architecture, and features a quarter mile long pier.
