HOLIDAYS TO THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

A selection of escorted holidays and tours of the Scottish Highlands by coach

Head towards northwest Scotland and you will find yourself in the Highlands, regarded as one of the most spectacular regions of the country.

The area is sparsely populated with only one city – Inverness, and features numerous mountain ranges, the most famous of which is Ben Nevis.

This is a place of outstanding beauty and a treasure trove of scenic delights, with crystal clear lakes, pine forests, dramatic seascapes, and beaches with sand so white, that you could be fooled into believing you are in the Caribbean.

If you are into your wildlife, the Moray Firth, an inlet on the North Sea coast, is one of the best known places in Europe for spotting bottlenose dolphins, and it is also possible to spot whales and harbour porpoises, and the centre of the Highlands, you will find famous Loch Ness, with its legendary monster.

On a Grand UK coach holiday to the Scottish Highlands enjoy seamless coach travel, overnight stops, the expertise of one of our Tour Managers, and hand-chosen half-board accommodations. Plus, all excursions and admission fees listed on the itinerary are included.

Places to visit in the Scottish Highlands

Inverness
Inverness

Although one of the smallest and most compact cities in Scotland, Inverness is known as the “cultural capital” of the Highlands, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Visit beautiful St Andrew’s Cathedral and Inverness Castle, or perhaps spend time at the busy Victorian market.
Isle of Skye
Isle of Skye

The largest island of the Inner Hebrides, and the only one connected to the mainland by a bridge, Skye is one of the top destinations in Scotland to visit and is known for its beautiful landscapes and scenery. The island has a rich and varied history and is a haven for wildlife, and its capital, Portree, is well worth a visit.
Fort William
Fort William

Perhaps best known as the gateway to the UK’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, the town of Fort William can be found on the western shore of Loch Linnhe, and offers a wild and mountainous landscape. As well as offering historical and cultural attractions, there are also six beaches to explore.
Glencoe
Glencoe

Set in a deep valley amidst the mountains, and nestled between Loch Leven and the famous Glen Coe, you will find this picturesque village, which is perhaps as famous for its turbulent past – being the setting of the infamous 1692 massacre - as it is for its wild beauty.
Falls of Shin
Falls of Shin

A notable sight in northwest Scotland, this famous waterfall can be found on the River Shin between the villages of Bonar Bridge and Lairg. The falls are known for their power and also for the leaping salmon that try to climb them, and the pretty woodland surroundings offer plenty of walking trails.
Loch Ness
Loch Ness

This vast and ancient loch is one of Scotland’s deepest and its legend and romance draws visitors from far afield. Best known for its claimed monster sightings, it is also an area of outstanding beauty.

You might not encounter Nessie on your visit, but it’s possible you may see the loch’s other famous residents: the bottlenose dolphins.
Wester Ross
Wester Ross

This sparsely populated area is best known for its stunning mountain scenery, with the Torridon Hills being perhaps the most dramatic, and much of Wester Ross is designated as a National Scenic Area.

Discover beautiful lochs, deep glens, and beaches that rival those of the Mediterranean.
Strathpeffer
Strathpeffer

This charming and leafy village, surrounded by wooded hills and standing in the shadow of Ben Wyvis, is also a Victorian spa town.

Originally built by a railway company to bring people to the spa, Strathpeffer now has plenty to offer visitors. As well as the pump rooms, gardens, museums, and whisky distilleries
John o’ Groats
John o’ Groats

Lying on Scotland’s north-eastern tip, this famous village is famous as being the mainland’s furthest point from Land’s End in Cornwall.

The iconic John o’ Groats signpost is possibly the most photographed in the world, and there is much to see in the way of dramatic scenery, plus lovely beaches and further inland, craft stores to explore.
Kingussie
Kingussie

This small, but lively town lies in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park and offers much to visitors, from activities for nature enthusiasts, to museums and galleries, and art and craft shops. Kingussie is known as having a big heart and you can be assured of a warm Scottish welcome.
Dornoch
Dornoch

Nestled in a sheltered position on the east coast of the North Highlands, this thriving town boasts stunning beaches and wild rugged scenery, as well as a rich historic culture.

The impressive cathedral is well worth a visit and dates back to 1224.
Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle

Positioned on a headland with stunning views across Loch Ness, the ruins of Urquhart Castle showcase the Highlands at its most dramatic.

Home to over a thousand years of turbulent history as control of the castle passed between the Scots and the English there is much to see, including the gloomy prison cell and spectacular Grant Tower.
Eilean Donan Castle
Eilean Donan Castle

Steeped in history, myth and legend, this famous castle may look familiar, as it has been used as a filming location for a number of movies, including Highlander. Set on an island at the point where three great lochs meet, it offers majestic scenery.
Inverewe Garden
Inverewe Garden

Set in fifty acres of grounds on a remote stretch of coastline in the west of Scotland, this heritage garden is home to a number of rare species, which thrive thanks to the effects of the Gulf Stream.

As well as the many plants on display, the garden is also home to red squirrels, otters, seals, red deer and golden eagles.
The Kyle Line
The Kyle Line

Enjoy one of the world’s most scenic railway journeys, travelling coast to coast across the Highlands from Inverness to Loch Alsh.

The scenery en route is spectacular, from pretty villages to majestic mountains and the stunning coastline, including views of the Isle of Skye.
